Armadillo Asks: James Ray

We want to introduce you to the people who make Armadillo tick. So grab a coffee, settle back and say hello to James…

Name: James Ray
Job Title: CEO
Joined Armadillo: The 90s!

Tell us something about you that might surprise us.
A chance meeting with Kylie Minogue was instrumental in me joining Armadillo. Without that meeting, I might not be here now.

What’s something you’ve been meaning to try but just haven’t gotten around to it?
I spend a lot of time road cycling, but I’ve never tried time-trialling. Realistically needs more training discipline than I’d ever manage!

If you were stuck on a desert island, which book, film and album would you take?
I don’t read books twice – so something I haven’t read yet! Film – Pulp Fiction; album – The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths

If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would you do?
I’d have a travel binge, and take the family to a load of places we haven’t been to yet. And probably buy a bike or six.

James’ favourite quote

We talk about it for twenty minutes and then we decide I was right.

Brian Clough

What’s your biggest Professional achievement?
Becoming CEO and co-owner of Armadillo. It took a while!

Do you have a side hustle you’d like to share?
I am trained to Harrods standard in gift wrapping.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?
Use of analogies in conversation.

What could you give a 20-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
The D-Day landings (I am a military history nerd on the quiet).

Describe what you do in 10 words or less.

Lead people more talented than me to do exceptional work

What’s the most inspiring part of your job?
Cringe warning – but it is the people; our team and also our clients.

If someone only had one day to spend in Bristol, what should they do?
Enjoy the floating harbour in the sunshine

What are the three best things about working at Armadillo?
The people, the culture, and the people.
